Hawkins Road, especially the education and relocation training was used as a model for West German and Australian refugee camps as well as the Camp at Galang, Indonesia.

The government was very supportive, considering the size of the country and large numbers of refugees, of those who came to the camp and even arranged for joint CID investigations of abuses by Malaysian armed forces.

The camp population was very low in the period August-Dec 1986

Shashi Tharoor, a Member of the Indian Parliament, was instrumental in setting up the Hawkins Road Vietnamese Refugee Camp as we knew it. He ran it from 1981 to 1984 as a staff member of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
He's a prolific social media user among elected officials in the world. Author, humanitarian, peacekeeper, columnist, former UN Under-Secretary General, former Minister of State for External Affairs, Govt of India.
