Story of PTG 001

Passengers' stories

From Kien

Thank you for collecting the refugee information for those who had been on the island. These pictures invoke the memory of those who were lucky enough to step on this island. Many have perished on the ocean on their quest to freedom.

I was on board a boat with 68 other people, adults and children leaving Long Xuyen, Vietnam on June 7, 1980 (if I recalled correctly).

My boat was towed by the Malaysian Sea Patrol or Navy to Mersing on June 16, 1980. We were then transferred to Pulau Tengah the next day. My boat number was PTG-001. The boat was left ashore on the island. Luckily, all people on board survived. Some have then emigrated to Canada, Australia, & the United States.

I left the island around January 1981 and went to the US. I don't have any picture with me on the island. I hope other people can submit their pictures so all of us can reminisce the time we were there.
